A two point perspective

Gap Statement:

Define a living space system which is elegant, space efficient, inexpensive and useful.  I'm addressing a system not a isolated product.  The rationale is that I don't want an island solution that stands alone.  I probably won't be able to build all of them in 8 weeks, however I can certainly get a key prototype of one in many of the families.

User Need:
  • A Storage System
  • A Shelving System
  • A Sofa System
  • A Deck System of Layout
  • A Lighting System
  • Space Saving
  • Aesthetic

Decomposed:

Subdivision by Key/Latent Needs:

Aesthetics:
Use common materials in uncommon ways (common inexpensive materials)
Think rich, look poor (high design, high concept, no unnecessary detail, no pretenses, honesty of materials, re-purposed materials)
Geometric minimalism (easy, clean, elegant even sophisticated)
  • Scaling up and down of design
  • detail to the finest granularity
  • balance of simple/complex detail
  • balance of ordered pattern and chaos
  • contrast geometric simplicity with organic complexity

Subdivision by Uses/Actions:

Storage:
  • Bins (Quick immediate storage, good for organizing and sorting, Open or exposed )
  • Drawers (Short term storage, semi open)
  • Containers(longer term storage, more sealed against environment)
Shelving:
  • Books (eye and hand level for easy access)
  • Displays (any location, finer detail near eye level and closer for inspection)
  • Equipment/Electronics (land line phone, entertainment etc. )
  • Plants (anywhere, similar detailing to "Displays" above)
  • Folded Clothes/Accessories (high use, maybe next day's clothes)

Sofa/Lounge

  • Interlocking
  • Reconfigurable
  • Single Seat,
  • Love Seat,
  • Sofa,
  • Ottoman,
  • Chaise.. side table?
Deck/Outdoor:
  • The Deck
  • A Workout Space
  • A Recliner
  • A Water Feature/ Meditation Pond or Garden
Lighting:
  • Area Lighting (from above, wide area, dispersed)
  • Floor Lighting
  • Table Lighting (general)
  • Desk Lighting (directional)
  • Back Lighting (night)

Subdivision by Function:

Space Saving:
Modular: only have what you need in any combination
Reconfigurable:  (folding, nesting, stack-able)
Multifunctional:

A Basic Sofa Concept.  There is an emphasis on proportion and scale, while keeping it build-able.

Various Lamp Ideas: Constructed from Common PVC tubing, but used in new ways.  Its designed to complement the scale and proportions of the sofa/seating above and the rest of the designs to follow.
